While funding opportunities are highly competitive, the majority of the students admitted to the Translation MFA receive some form of financial aid, such as the Iowa Arts Fellowship, International Writing Program research assistantship, or teaching assistantships in translation, rhetoric, foreign languages, and General Education Literature. Furthermore, the program is able to nominate a newly admitted student for an additional Iowa Arts Fellowship for Diversity (the nominee has to be a US citizen and member of an underrepresented group).

An appointment to teach three courses per academic year is considered a half-time teaching assistantship; two courses is a third-time assistantship. A teaching appointment that is a quarter-time or more qualifies students for in-state resident tuition.

Grants and fellowships through the International Programs Office provide support for summer research and residency overseas.
